Overwhelmed Newbies--Help!

My husband and I are buying our first travel trailer and we are frustrated with all the choices and little direction on what will work best for us as well as our tow vehicle, so I am asking you experience folks for some suggestions.

First off, we will be weekend camping at campgrounds in and around our home state of WV (read hilly). Our TV is a 2014 Nissan Frontier King cab V6, which I believe has a towing capacity of 6,500 lbs. We are looking at lightweight 18-20 foot travel trailers, used. Our budget is under $10,000. We would go a little higher for quality. The only travelers will be the two of us and our furbabies (two spoiled rotten yorkies, who created this desire for TT in the first place! Have I mentioned, they’re spoiled?)

From what I’ve seen so far, I really like the layout and looks of the:
  • Fun finder X 189 FBS, (my husband like the narrower 7’ width for tow purposes)
    Fun finder X 189 FBR
    Shadow Cruiser M-185 FBS,
Flagstaff Micro lite 18 FBRS, and
    Rockwood Mini lite 18 FBRS.

See a pattern? Also, I like the extra room the slides provide, however I’m a little concerned about the extra weight. We may add a tantem kayak in the future, possibly adding an additional 100 pounds (including rack) to the TV. My husband’s main concern is towing—the most he has towed is a utility trailer back and forth to Lowes.

Ok, while writing this, my husband found a used 2010 Fun Finder X 189 FBR for $11,000. From the pictures, it’s in great condition; however, we will need to make a trip this weekend to see it in person before making a final decision. So, any suggestions/comments needed ASAP! Is the Fun Finder a good choice at that price or keep looking?
  • I've seen several fun finders around and have not heard any negative things. I don't think they are as popular around here as other places though.
  • Why not rent a trailer or two in the lenght range you are thinking about and try it first before spending your money only to find out you made a mistake.
  • G'day Greg and Linda
Prior to purchasing our first 28ft fifth wheel my husband and I had only ever towed a 6x4 trailer just like you. Just take it slow and steady and you won't have a problem. And when reversing - just be very patient with each other. It took me a long time to realize that my OH thought that because he was looking at me through a mirror when reversing that it was a 'mirror image' so if I had my right hand up that meant I wanted him to go left. We sorted that out and now we can put our 5er anywhere - almost~~

    Cheers
  • HappyKayakers, thanks for the laugh! I will definitely keep that in mind when we shop for Kayaks. ;) Thanks for the info!
  • Here's one place to research for towing capabilities: http://www.trailerlife.com/trailer-towing-guides/

If you already have experience with a tandem kayak, great. If not, you may want to reconsider. For some paddlers, that type of kayak is also referred to as a 'divorce boat' :W

Tried to also send you a PM but you have that turned off. You might also find some useful info on my website.
  • Weight is not really the big issue for small trucks. Frontal area will be your big killer. Think in terms of a tent trailer and you will be much happier. Besides used tent trailers can be a great bargain.
  • even thought the Frontier has that much towing capacity, that v-6 could be overwhelmed if you had chosen a trailer in that weight range.
so, the lengths you're looking at are good.

the Flagstaff and the Rockwood are exact twin models. the only difference is the outside graphics and interior fabric colors/patterns.

get a price from RVW or RVDirect on the Mini Lite 18FBRS. they have some of the best prices in the country on Rockwood products. use those prices to shop around with.
