Hubby and I are at a similar stage, also in our 50s, but without the ability to retired. We sold our Endura a few years ago. With our only son in college we the extra cash came in handy plus we weren't using it. He'll finish up grad school next May and we've been trying to make a similar decision. Pros and cons to both-although for some it's black and white, I think for most there are a lot of gray areas.
Cottage pros: Easy to take dogs, 2 hours or so from home, easy to do on weekends, no set-up, late pull-in not a big deal, can leave boats there, no worries about cancellation fees or changes in schedule, should appreciate in value
Cottage cons: Maintenance, scenery doesn't change, can be more expensive than RV
RV pros: Moveable, bug-out vehicle if necessary, you can visit more places, can be less expensive than RV, more freedom
RV cons: Maintenance, potential long drives, sometimes costs involved if you change plans, traffic, hauling things like boats, guaranteed depreciation
It's all in what you feel is most important to you or what you are most willing to give up. If you've got a lot of time to get places and like the change of scenery, then RV it. If you've got limited time and like the comfort zone of going to the same place, then a cottage may work. We like to travel by air as we just can't get to a lot of places by driving, so for right now having neither is working. At times we miss being on the road and at times we wish we had a place to go and chill without the stress of driving, setting up, etc.
Write down what's most important to you, i.e. change of scenery, comfort of going to the same spot, etc., and assign a point value on a set scale (say 1-10). Add up the points and see which one wins. And remember that nothing is set in stone. You can always change your mind.
