For gravel, try one of those mud scrapers for shoes - the long bristles should help to remove the gravel from the shoe tread.
I've tried the ties outs, etc., and honestly I gave up on all of them. They were just more trouble than they were worth.
Now, I just keep them on their leashes. It keeps them near me and in my direct control. I never leave the dogs outside when I go inside the RV (even for a moment). I never have to worry about one of them getting into trouble without me realizing. It just works the best.
