Hindsite is great, but you should have started this part of your trip a long time ago if you have no RVing experience. It takes most people about a year to decide what they want before they buy. Most people who don't spend a lot of research time often find out they would have been happier with something else.
The idea of an ex-rental unit isn't bad, but most of those may be above $20K. While they've seen use, they're usually in good shape because trying to fix them while they're out on a rental is expensive.
Go spend the next week looking at used RV lots / dealers close to you to see what you like and don't like. Read all of the threads on tires in the forum, that will be a larger expense for you if you need to replace them. Learn how to read the tire dates.
Sign up for a Roadside assistance like Good Sam's for about $90 a year. It's money well spent if you get a flat or breakdown. The policy will also apply to any of your other vehicles.
While I know you want to get started on your trip, go for several shorter trips first before you take off for good.
If you buy a MH, you really shold have a toad unless you have a very small Class C. It will make the trip easier, more enjoyable, and cheaper in the long run. As others have suggested, a TT may work better if you aready have something you can tow with.
