I don't agree with this. Yes you are putting on more road miles but to say it makes a BIG difference is incorrect.
Oh it makes a big difference all right. When you break down you worry about how to get it home. When a full timer breaks down they are home on the side of a road.
I would say if 20k is the high end then getting another job would be the smartest move.
