Just my opinion, but I suggest starting with a used pop up...One with a 10-12 foot box with a slide out for dinette...You didn't say how old the kids were, but this would give you plenty of floor place for play pen, play area, and room for the dog..etc.. Try it out for a few years and upgrade as you can..As many others here we started out in a tent graduated to a bigger tent, then two different pups, and now a TT.
