Came here to ask a similar question as this is something I need to better understand and pay more attention to.
I have a horse trailer with an LQ, 15 foot short wall. Fridge, water heater, microvwave, 2 tvs, etc. We go to some horse shows where we have 30 amp service and plug in with the heavy cord that came with the trailer. Some places no power so I use the heavy cord with two Honda 2000 generators. Sometimes it's at my friends house plugged into the barn or the house. Honestly I really haven't paid attention to how I do things. If I plug it in and works good enough fir me. Probably not a good idea.
i know when I plug into a full service site I should be good. When I use the generatoers hooked togeater I use my heavy cord and plug into the 30 amp socket. When I use one generator, which I do when we don't need the AC I don't really have a method for what I do. Sometimes I use the adapter with the regular 110 end and plug in that way or sometimes I plug it into the 30 amp plug. Honestly it just depends which generator I grab as only one has a 30 amp.
When I plug in at my friends the rv cord isn't long enough so I just use a outdoor extension cord and either plug into the outside of the house or in the barn. No idea what size breakers are involved. At the house (or barn) we do use the trailer similar to camping. Sometimes the kids stay in there for fun so AC, TV, Etc.
Here are the questions I have....
When I use one generator is there any reason I can't use just a short outdoor cord? I only need about 6 feet to get to the generators. What about when I use 2 generators? Any reason I couldn't use the same cord in the 30 amp plug with an adapter? The reason I ask is because when we go to some of these day shows it's in and out in a day. A lot of setting up. Tearing down in a very short time period.it would be nice to just grab a little cord rather than dragging out the long heavy rv cord.
What about at the house and barn? What's my risks using a regular cord to extend the RV cord? What do I need to know? What do I need to pay attention to?
Sorry for long post but it's something I haven't paid attention to and need to.
