So purging the line by lighting the stove is necessity? Or can I just turn the valve on the tanks to on and go? Seems like there is two trains of thought here.
It is not a necessity. I don't ever do it. My refrigerator and stove are on separate sides of the camper. The propane line splits almost immediately after it leaves the tank. Lighting the stove top burners wouldn't help much.
If it is quiet in the camper, when you turn the frig on propane you should hear the ignition clicking. The refrigerator will attempt to light 3 times, then it will stop. You will need to turn the refrigerator off and then back on again to get it to attempt to light again if it fails the first time.
With our motorhome, there are only a handful of times that the refrigerator failed to light on the first attempt. When that happens, a code will flash on the control panel. I turn the refrigerator off, then turn it back on. It's never not lite on the second attempt.
For us, I do the stove top trick to help with the hot water heater since they are right next to each other.
