To those advocating staying ONLY IN CAMPGROUNDS, it's not always convenient or possible. We travel at all times of the year and often find many campgrounds CLOSED for the season or far and few between our starting point and our ultimate destination. Where we make quick overnight stops for free has nothing to do with paying a fee to stay in a campground or not.
To the O.P, I believe you have been given some good advice from helpful experienced travelers and can sort out the obvious.
