So my wife and 3 boys and I are planning a 7 week RV trip next summer. We don't own one but looking to rent one. We have talked about buying one so this would be the perfect way to introduce ourselves into the RV lifestyle. We have our route picked out but now trying to find a nice RV to rent that won't completely break our budget. I'd like to stay around the 40' range. I haven't ever driven an RV but I do drive an 04 GMC Top Kick that I tow a 48' race car trailer with. Driven up and down the East Coast many times with it so I do have experience driving a looooong rig. Lol. Is anyone out there who could help us out with some suggestions? We'd appreciate it.

Nothing wrong with renting and trying out a 40' DP, but have you priced the rental yet? A 40' DP is going to cost an awful lot more than a Class C to rent. You can rent 34' and maybe a little longer Class Cs for a whole lot less.Please post the pricing you find as others will be interested.Bill

If you plan to buy some day then rent that type. Or just try a class C for the RV learning experience, they have plenty of sleeping positions. Have fun!

Yeah we've priced a few. They're proud of them. Lol. Most we've seen are about 3500-5000/week. :( I'm not giving up though. We're putting away $1500.00/month from now until next June so that should be able to help us out some. Some have unlimited milage and others allow 500/day. Maybe we will look into a Class C but truly wanting a Class A.

We rented from Apollo Motors. Got a good deal on a 31 foot Minnie Winnie. We bought the upgrade plan for an extra 100 a day, but this gave us unlimited miles and since we were going about 4000 round trip it was worth it.Word of warning though! We bought a class A one month later because we loved it so much!!!!Take it for a spin when you rent and take paper notes of what you liked and didn't like and this would help you when purchasing.

This included unlimited miles, plates, pots pans, outside table and chairs, linens, plus an extra 50 and we got unlimited generator use. Also covered our insurance for me and wife.We priced a lot of places and the thing to watch out for is the mileage charge.Another option is to look on craigslist for individuals renting out.

Look for a private rental. Cheaper in the long run and generally in better mechanical shape.

Yes there are Cruise America has a program.

As does many other companies such as the one that I purchased mine from.

Of course a gas motorhome can travel cross-country. In fact, that might be a good option for your first one to really see how you like RVing.

So…… I see Gas ones for sale all over. Do gas engines really have the oomph to get them going on a cross country trip? Seems like diesel would be the way to go no?

Well we are looking into buying a used Class A. Since I travel racing a good amount, it would be nice to have an RV at the track. I got my quote from Allstar…. Buwahaha…. they wanted $39K for the time we would be gone. Ummmm…. nope I pass. That's almost criminal. Granted it was a 43' almost brand new machine and renting it from June 19-Aug 10th.

Since you've never RV'd before you might consider renting one for a weekend or two to see if you could really do it. For the money of rental you could stay in motels.

We went through the same discussion when we decided to try RVing. Getting serious sticker shock when we priced rentals, we decided to buy a used class A instead for short money. We bought the green machine last year and at the quoted rental costs for a similar model, we're already ahead having taken only a dozen trips.

We figure we can sell it for what we bought it for and only be out the cost of upgrades and insurance. Already looking at newer/bigger class As for next year.

If you already have the cash saved, and I know that was tough to do, then don't just give it to some rental company.

just did a search on Lazy Daze, TN, for a 27 ft Class C, sleeps 6, $28,000. folks here seem to think that lazydaze are decent units would be a bit crowded but paid for for what you would lose in rent. tow a small uhaul trailer for stuff. plenty of miles but fairly new.
