Reservations or not

So we are leaving on our first multi state trip driving from Illinois to Bozeman MT. We made reservations at the end stop but don't know about making res. for the overnights on the road. Not knowing how far we will get each night it is hard to do so. Any suggestions on the overnights?

  • I think it depends on your personality. Many people can "wing it" and be just fine. For others, it can be more stressful not knowing where they'll be staying than it will be trying to make that deadline.

For me, I like to have a plan. While I may not make reservations, I would do research in advance and have several places in mind at different intervals so I have a good idea of where to stay. When I'm tired of driving, I don't want to have to drive another hour to get to a place to stop. Having several places along the route in mind, I can easily think "hmm, I'm not real tired now, but there is a nice place to stop in 15 minutes. If I don't stop there, I'll have to drive another 1-1/2 hours for a nice place. I'll stop now."
  • I agree with winging it,and if you have a smart phone This App is great to help find places along your route to stay, lists campgrounds, Walmarts, Truck stops and other places to stay.

I think you will be more relaxed if you do not HAVE to be somewhere on a given night.

There always is WalMart, Cracker Barrel or the truck section of a rest area if you get in a bind. Always ask on those first two and scan for "no overnight parking" signs at the rest areas.
  • You should find plenty of places that will fit your 26' camper.

Alot of us use PassPort America parks for the "in between" nights getting to our destinations.

  • Sometimes it takes 4 days to do a 1 day trip, we never make reservations.
