I think that approach would work out pretty well - even if you didn't bother with the jbweld step (as long as you didn't end up with big gaps). I wanted to see if I could do it without the cuts first though - since it doesn't have them originally and would look cleaner I think. Good fallback idea though - whatever it takes to get it sealed up tight.
