RV/Car Insurance

I'll be taking possession of my 36" Dolphin this Friday. I will, of course, need to have insurance in place.

I've received a quote, from Progressive Northern, for the RV only. This quote was arranged by the folks I'm purchasing from, PPL in Houston.

I've received a quote, online, for both the RV and my Toad, from Good Sam.

I'll be calling my current Insurance Co, Farmer's, for a quote to add the RV.

I've read that "standard" insurance might not address the needs of and RV owner or a Full-Timer.

I already established a new "residence" via Americas Mailbox, so I now hail from South Dakota.

Any insight or advise would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

  • Another difference may be that your AAA policy is not set up for a fulltimer. Big difference.

IN another thread I talked about insurance and what one agent told me.

MOST insurance companies sell your policy to a re-insurer. So if a lot of that company's clients suffer insured losses, then that company's rates go up and so do yours.

Some companies do not do this (But it still holds that if a lot of their clients suffer loss their rates go up).

Back in the mid 2000's (like 2003 or 4) I was insurance shopping, Just for fun I asked AAA Michigan for a quote.. Their quote was the same price as several other companies I priced... With one small difference, it was a 12 month price where as the others were only six months worth of insurance, Same driver, Same car, half the price per month.. What's the difference.

    AAA Michigan does not re-sell

On 09/11/2001, those re-insurers suffered tremendous losses, mostly in New York.. Very few AAA-Michigan clients were in NYC at that time, if any. (Though a good number showed up shortly after) Or so the agent explained it.

The moral of this story: DO the shop around,, Keep shopping.
  • If you call Good Sam, be sure to have them quote you through other companies than National General (GMAC). They will automatically quote you through National General. We have our RV insured with Allied (Nationwide company) through Good Sam and the yearly rate is half of National General. Many others have realized the same thing.
  • You're going FT....living in the RV?

Then 'standard' insurgence will not cover your 'home'

Best to have a 'home owners' type policy......vehicle insurance plus.
Similar/same as policy covering your sitx/brick house.

    National Interstate
    Bluesky
    Foremost

We used National Interstate for 7 yrs. of FT travel.
Personal belongings, custom equipment, replacement coverage, medical, slip/fall liability, motel/hotel expense if 'home' in for repairs.
Great pricing, great customer service, great response......2 claims. 1 minor/1 MAJOR both handled quickly, efficiently, no hassles/no problems
  • I agree with lanerd... have been with GMAC (National General) for a couple of years. Besides good rates they are the only one I've found that will let you put a vehicle in "storage" and reduce your premium accordingly. A phone call puts all of your coverage's back in place when you hit the road.

Also, had the MH in storage mode and needed to take it to the dealer for a minor problem I wanted fixed before we started traveling this year. I called Nat General and they have me 24hrs to get things taken care of without taking the unit out of storage yet with full coverage for the 24 hours.
  • Mike, I have used the Good Sam (was GMAC now National General) for about six or seven years now. Every year I go through the researching process to see if I can find better (cheaper) insurance. In every case, I've found insurance companies that will have cheaper rv insurance but when I add my autos (4 of them), it is more than my Good Sam....also I've found companies that have cheaper auto insurance but when I add my MH, it is more.

Since we spend 6 months in CA during the winter and 6 months in OR during the summer, one of the benefits that I've found with Good Sam is that I can reduce my premium in the summer by eliminating all auto insurance (with the exception of my toad) and in the winter by eliminating the insurance (with the exception of comprehensive) on the MH. This reduces my annual insurance cost by several hundred $$.

    Hope this helps

    Ron
