Bearcat, what you're calling an equalizer, is not an Equalizer brand hitch which is a completely different animal. You've got the old fashioned weight distributing hitch with bars and chains and add-on friction sway control. Nothing wrong with them if set up right, I towed with one for 10 years. Your problem is you do not have it set up correctly to transfer the required weight back to the front end. This involves setting the tilt in the head up correctly and adjusting the height of the ball properly, and then putting the correct number of chain links under tension. Get a manual for this type hitch and start from scratch.
