He didn't have enough sense to turn the water off before he went looking for help?
He may be destined for more problems in the future.
Sometimes when things go wrong, you panic and don't stop and think things thru.
I remember as a kid, I finally convinced my Dad, I could handle the ridding lawnmower...10min later I found myself having run into a fence. I panicked. He was never going to let me use it again. I jumped off and ran to the house to get him. A few minutes later, he came out, the blades still going, the rear tires still spinning in place and he turned the key off to stop the blades. It never dawned on me until we were walking back out, that I could simply put it in reverse...which I sheepishly mentioned as the engine died. It's not like I didn't understand how reverse worked. I just wasn't focused on working out the problem. My Dad thought it was funny more than anything and put me back to work mowing the lawn.
I'm sure it was similar here. He was panicking because the toilet was overflowing like a bad comedy and didn't stop to troubleshoot why it happened. Doesn't mean he's dumb or doesn't have common sense, just got away from him.
