Solo Traveling

As confident as I am with hooking up & reversing the 5er, if I was going solo I would seriously consider downsizing in a big way. A Sprinter van B comes to mind perhaps carrying a 250cc scooter or a dualsport 250cc bike. Something to get around but not too heavy.

Take your time, go slow, all will be fine!

As a brand new "class C" RV'er.....meaning I'm brand new at it, I don't have many tips for you.

However, I can say wholeheartedly that being a solo RV'er severely lessens the amount of people that will be around to remind you of any mistakes you may have made during your trip. LOL

Solo with a TT is not hard. I did that for years, just me & the dog. As you get older the hitching and leveling also get old. What ever you buy, make sure it has a comfortable bathroom and maybe a walk around bed.

Eventually I also got tired of having to get out of the truck to go to use the bathroom while on the road. Now I feel much safer in a rest area. When I do go out my big black dog is with me. By the way, a dog that does not bark when left along is very important. I turn on the radio for mine.

I'm a single Rver. That's the reason I have a 'C' and pull a toad. Easier to drive the Jeep to the 'C' than try to back a TV up to the TT to hook up. On the rare occasion when I have to take a back-in site, I can unhook the toad, and back the 'C' into the site and still keep both rear corners in view in the mirrors. I'd rather park by sight than sound. :)

I use magnetic sticks. AND...
I also put a 1/2" black, stick on 'Target Dot' in the center of
my rear window. Helps backing with or without the 'Sticks'.

I find that my wife of 39 yrs does not speak the same language,
when she attempts to help.
I do the backing, hooking up, unhooking, ect w/o help.
IT'S EASIER.
I'm not going to provide entertainment to others in the camp.

(Its also much easier if you do some practicing in a parking lot)

I travel solo most of the time with my little T@B. I, too, use the telescoping magnetic tennis ball set for hooking up. I also like to place a rock, pine cone, stick, or other object on the pad where I want my driver's side wheel to "land". It keeps me from getting out to see if I've landed where I really want to be.

I like the GPS for the fact that it shows me what side of the road I need to be on for exits and "Y"s that I will be approaching. It gives me ample time to get in the correct lane.

I don't plan out too much of my route because I like to be spontaneous. If I see something that looks interesting, then I investigate it. I took an 11-day trip this spring, though, and got in a difficult situation at a fuel stop where the tanker pulled in and blocked my exit. He was going to be there 45 minutes. Ugh. Backing out was difficult without a spotter because of the******they sell and have lined up at the end of pump islands (bottled water, firewood, etc), as well as people zipping by pulling into the grocery store, which shares the lot. I made it, but it wasn't pretty.

I often assist others backing into a site.

I have a lot of practice, Grew up on a farm, Used to back a trailer into a gap between two buildings, had to back around an "S" curve and if you were perfectly centered.. There was not enough clearance to walk either side of the trailer.

Still.. I find it helpful to have an assistant.

Mirrors and cameras do help

But alas, you can never see everything, EPICALLY when backing a trailer.
