Being able to actually see the 5th. wheel hitch line up to the trailer pin makes it so much easier.
Depends on truck perhaps. I cannot see the hitch in my rear view mirror nor over the shoulder out the window. I can see the king pin and I center it in the bed, back up until I'm close then get out and check. A couple tries and I'm hitched up.
In order to be able to see the hitch and king pin line up, I painted a 3 inch white line down the center of the king pin by using masking tape and a spray can. Now when I back up and am looking in the rear view mirror, I just watch the white line and make sure it is visually lining up with the hitch. When the hitch just touches the king pin I stop and make sure the hitch is low enough to force the king pin to be level. I then just ease the truck back making sure the jaws close up properly. After dropping in the safety pin, I raise the front jacks about 1 inch off the ground, put a wood block in front of a trailer tire then pull the truck forward just a couple of inches to make sure the trailer and truck are safely hitched up. If the trailer comes on hitched while i am testing, then the trailer will only drop the 1 inch to the ground, instead of hitting the bed rails:(.
