Surge Protector

My TT has a 30 amp service. I bought a 30 amp surge protector. If I go to a site that has 50 amp service can I buy a 50 amp to 30 amp adapter and still use my 30 amp surge protector or do I need to purchase a 50 amp surge protector?

Not true at all ... current TRC Surge Guard models are now being sold with a lifetime warranty. In fact, those interested in a hard wire version might prefer TRC over Progressive because their warranty isn't as restrictive as Progressive's new warranty in terms of who must install their hard wire version in order to not void the warranty. And FWIW, the Progressive EMS-PT30C has been replaced by the EMS-PT30X.

Current TRC models no longer rely on coloured lights to indicate errors but feature a full LCD display to indicate various errors detected. TRC models also include an 8" - 10" trip delay which is useful for avoiding nuisance trips when incoming source voltage is hovering slightly above & just below the trip threshold voltage ... Progressive units have no such feature.

No matter as far as the OP is concerned as we now know he bought a TRC Surge Guard, either a 34830 or 34930 model.

There are Surge Protectors and Surge Protectures. TRC (Technical Research Corp) makers of the Surge Guard line make some that are very good. The portable versions have an LCD display that shows voltage, and current (Alternating) and possibly a warning or two as well as a few LED's they take just shy of 3 minutes to pass power to your RV

The Progressive Industries PW-30 C.. Has a much better warranty. otherwise see above.

Both companies also make some that do not have LCD displays.. Avoid.

THey also make a Hard Wired version,, with a Optional Remote Display, at least i think it's optional. I do not have info on the TRC hard wired but on the PI (HW-30C) you have a choice of 15 seconds or close to 3 minutes on the time before power is passed.. Choose the longer time.

    What these do
The low cost no LCD.. Spike suppression When a big motor (Air conditioner) starts or stops (And some other loads as well) there is often a voltage SPIKE, I've seen it knock out computers (They did not listen when I hollered NO and blew out my office, now they listen). but not much of anything else.

The more expensive ones with the LCD do that as well but they also monitor Voltage (And often Frequency) and if it goes high or low (Beyond pre-sets) it will cut you off to protect you

High voltage damages electronics,, Converter, TV, Radio, et-al
Low damages air conditioners and other MOTORISED stuff like residential Firdge.

Likewise high/low frequency can mess things up.

The 3 minute timer protects the Air Conditioner if you have what I call a power "Blink" (power goes out for just a couple seconds) by giving them time to bleed down before they restart.

So either a #34830 or #34930, both EMS w/surge protection ... that's good. :B All you need then to plug into 50 amp service should that ever be necessary is a 30 amp female > 50 amp male dogbone, this being an example.

While a simple surge protector does serve a purpose you'd be FAR better off to invest in a fully featured EMS w/surge protection. If you haven't I'd suggest you return that SP and invest in an EMS, either from TRC (Technology Research) or Progressive Industries. Out of curiosity what exactly did you buy? :@

  • That shouldn't be a problem. It is rare that you will find a a 50 amp only hookup but it is always possible. I have used an adapter to use the 50 amp outlets because the 30 amp outlets were getting very worn and not making a solid connection.
  • Yes, no problem using the adapter. We have used ours several times in the same manner.
