Tennessee RVing

We just got our first travel trailer, looking forward to it but need some ideas on where to go. We are close to Memphis and still working, so stuck with weekend trips for now. We started at Shelby Meeman State Park and with our first successful outing under our belts, ready for more!

We travel with two small dogs.

Thanks for any ideas!

  • 1-2 hours south of Memphis are some very nice Corp of Engineer Parks. Some at
Aratutla Lake, Enid Lake, Sardis Lake and Grenada Lake. We stayed at Enid Lake at Wallace Creek campground and checked out Persimmon Hill. Both were very nice.
Both had paved/cement pads, water and electric, bath and showerhouse and a dump station, nice size sites, grass, trees. Not primitive, but woodsy. There are several campgrounds on each lake and some are primitive if that is what you prefer. They are all off I-55 from 1/2 hour to 2 hours south of Memphis.
Enid Lake is 10 miles long, 2 miles wide and there is a boat ramp. Supposed to be excellent fishing.
  • From Memphis I would go west into Missouri and Arkansas. I'm a hilly woods kind of guy. White River for some great fishing.

However, there is a nice complex of campgrounds and family entertainment (country music theme park) not too far east on I-40, and if all your are looking for is a place on the lake, there is Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky.

There are also COE parks and private RV parks all along the Mississippi, mostly on the other side in Arkansas and Missouri.
  • Natchez Trace in Lexington, Columbus-Belmont on the river up in Ky. Lake Wappello in MO, LBL in Tn and Ky, Several at Tunica, MS casinos, very reasonable. Trace SP outside Tupelo. Lots More.
  • I live next door to Shelby Forest. We go to Village Creek at Wynne Ar., Sardis , Enid, Arkabutla. One of our favorites isTrace State Park between Tupelo and Pontotoc Ms.There are many, many camping spots within 200 miles of Memphis. Good luck and have fun

We are in an RV club in West Tn. We have members from Reelfoot Lake to Southaven. We camp once a month, generally, about 9 months a year. We would love to have you join us. PM me if you are interested.

In the meantime, if I were going camping now, I would go to Village Creek State Park in Ark. Beautiful. But you have to go early spring or late fall, otherwise the mosquitos will carry you off.

Another of our favorites is Piney Campground at Kentucky Lake. DW grew up there.

A third is Trace State Park near Tupelo, MS.

These are ranked in my personal order of preference. Note that the Piney Campground has few sites with more than electric hookups.
  • Tishomingo State Park in MS is nice its on the Trace. About 120 miles from ya.
  • Try this for a start:

    Campgrounds near Memphis

What type of campground do you like - state, COE, private?

What type of activities do you like?

Let us know and we can make some suggestions.

    Congratulations on the new camper!
