Agree with the OP. Don't buy new. Buy lightly used almost new. A quality used is always better than same money low quality new. Research is key. There is much more to it than what condition the carpet is or does it smell like dog or smoke.
Time of year for purchase is important too. Best to buy at the end of summer when the seller does not want to pay for storage or another insurance premium.
