BHH, it is hard to say.. MOV's are "Consumables" (That is the active component in a spike supressor) they can only take so many big hits then they need replacement, Thankfully they are low cost (The box they go in is high cost though).
The worst case is a surge.. had one of those hit my house many years ago took out a blower motor (Furnace) a computer power supply and a good half dozen or more "Surge Protectors" of the MOV type (Spike suppressors) This was a true surge (Sustained high voltage) something like the Progressive HW-50C would have protected everything.
Same thing happened in a campground I used to frequent (I was not there at the time) and took out many appliances and converters.
Again, anyone with a true Surge Guard lost nothing.
But with a near miss lightening wise, the Spike suppressor or that part of the surge guard (Which contains MOV's for spike suppression) .. Well they are aged.
I can not tell you how to determine when they need replacement.
