Other than I live in a Nanny State that prohibits using plugs, I don't see using one in an urgent repair situation as being bad. I have noticed that all of the places here in CA that I have been to for nail and screw repair in the tread area have used patches inside the casing.
Some folks say that plugging can damage the steel band and I guess that could be true but I'm not sure so I would just as soon have just the patch.
My rig is built on a 16,000 pound chassis, I'm not sure that with the amount of flexing the properly inflated tires tires I have that I want to rely on a plug, on my F150, not so worried, on my house...
