As with all things, conditions vary, but (knock on wood) I haven't had to repair a tire in a while, but I've plugged plenty of tires without issue. It can be and is a competent repair, although if it was a newer tire, I'd only plug it in anemergency. Rather patch it given the opportunity. That said, I still pack tire plugs in the toolbox in the truck. A plugged tire beats a flat if that's the only other option.
