I had a total knee replacement five years ago at age 75.
I was dreading it and waited 15 years before finally relenting and getting it done.
My wife and I are canoe and kayak paddlers and even race them, and my goal was to be back in the canoe, (which is easier to get into then a kayak)within a month after having it done.
Believe it or not I was in the kayak 10 days later going right from therapy to the lake.
The day after I cam home from the hospital I walked around the house with a walker
The next day I walked about a hundred yards in the road, carrying the walker, (not using it).
Three days later, I walked a few hundred yards just carrying a cane.
For me the whole thing was a piece of cake.
I did my therapy like clockwork and even challenged it.
The first day home I took one of the pain pills and it made me so dizzy, I just took ibupropene from then on.
There was some pain in the middle of the night if I rolled over in my sleep.
The doctor said that I had such an easy time was because I was the perfect weight for my eight and frame.
My advice is:
1. If you are over weight, lose weight and get down to what your proper weight should be.
2. Do your therapy, exactly as it is prescribed and even more if you can tolerate it (that is what he said, and that is what I did
It was very obvious to me that in the therapy sessions the ones that were hurting the most were all the overweight ones
Finally: We have never lost a days camping because of it, and I now can hike mountains and do stuff that kept me in pain for 15 years prior to the operation.
If I can answer any questions, just fire away !
Good luck,
Jack L
