We pulled a popup with a Honda Pilot, it has a tow capacity of 4500lbs. With it loaded gear for a week, 2 adults, 2 Midas, and a golden retriever, it was about all is want to pull.
All it wanted to pull was a pop up? Because you were afraid to put your right foot down, that's why. I towed with a Pilot at max cap for years, enjoyably. Been up 8%+ grades with power left to accelerate. That's only if you allowed it to run at peak HP RPM of around 5-6k RPM which you clearly did not come near.
OP, look...you CAN in fact make that trailer and minivan work with a good WDH like a simple E2 or Equalizer hitch. But it wont be comfortable, just tolerable, and you will have to work the engine using your right foot. If you're talking about 3-5 hour drives only a few times a year, YOU WILL BE FINE.
