Traveling from CALI to midwest- rental info needed

HEllo out there, well Rving is not really new to me but I have owned a nice cabin for the last 20 years and now want to camp in different areas.. and see different views,,Don't get me wrong I love my cabin but time for a change.
For starters I looking to rent a small motorhome from Southern Cali to IOWA,, I will be traveling with new wife and 2 dogs,, I need Ideas where I can rent a RV for this trip one way..
Then I would be looking to you good people and campsites to stay along the way from California that are dog friendly,,
I am looking to make this trip in 4 to 5 days not really wanting to rush it but wanting to enjoy the sights and my new wife and dogs during this time.
Thank you for any help. I came to this site as my father was a good sam member over 30 years ago!!

  • I use RVPARKREVIEWS.COM to find campgrounds/resorts. Your dogs could be an issue - parks sometimes ban certain breeds, and I think I've seen German Shepherds (the dogs) listed. Ask before making a reservation.
  • I will try el monte rv Thank u.. the drive is 25 hours and Im an early riser(3or 4am) but will seep in til 7 on this trip, so if I leave by 8 and stop at 1 or 2 thats plenty of time with dogs and new wife or am i missing something? Ive made this trip in a car in 21 hours many times, if I have to extend it by a day or 2 thenits not the end of the world.
what funny is the places ive called for rv rental hardly any go to des moines but all say they get 4 or 5 request per week lol
  • Our point is we're not sure you can do that on driving 5 hours per day.

El Monte RV is the other major rental company. Not sure you'll get from your exact city in CA to Des Moines.
  • HEY!!! Again thank you for the response and help!!
Its not about the money its the experience, its about starting a new life with a new wife and rving back to our new home. were kinda checking out the rv thing as I've owned a cabin for so long but wanting ti venture out so this will be like killing 2 birds one stone lol...
I also agree we wont sight see much but its time together (with 2 german shepherds) even if its driving 5 hours a day and relaxing in a awesome park the rest of the day..
  • No idea what size your doggies are but this article might be of use to you:

    Low cost DIY RV
Oh and I put this link up because when you add in the cost per mile; mileage per gas mile and overall gas cost it's pretty expensive to rent an RV.
  • $1,780, if you spread it out over a week, is $250/day. That doesn't even count the gas. For that kind of money, you could drive a car or SUV (so the dogs would have space), save on gas, and have plenty left over for motels and food. If you do it during a nice time of year, you would still even have enough to buy some nice camping gear and tent camp. Plenty of campgrounds along the way that have showers etc.

And, for the record, 4-5 days isn't even that much to sightsee. I did Chicago to California, and it took me 5 days, could have done in 4 if I wasn't alone and it wasn't December. I drove an SUV and only really stopped for gas and lunch, except for the day I drove from Grand Junction to Vegas, I stopped often along the first part of that trip because of the scenery. I did the following:

    Day 1: Chicago to Omaha
Day 2: Omaha to Ft Collins, CO (a bit out of the way but had family there)
Day 3: Ft Collins, CO to Grand Junction (purposely planned this day short in case of bad weather through the mountains, weather was fine though)
Day 4: Grand Junction to Las Vegas
Day 5: Las Vegas to Fresno
  • Hey thanx for the REPLYs guys.. I did as you mentioned , I called cruise america, but the closest they can get me is OMAHA.
if I could get something to Des Moines that would be great,, I can do a 7 day but if I had to drop in OMAHA that would kill a day plus..
So my first goal will to be find a rental to des moines iowa,
Cruise wanted roughly 1780.00 for the trip if I book 6 months before,, 69.00 a day pluss .39 per mile and a 600.00 return fee this is for a 26ft motor home.. I m thinking of something shorter? any ideas? Thanx I really appreciate your time,,
  • I have to agree with 2gypsies, 5 days cross country is pretty much just driving and one way RV's will be very expensive. You could probably buy a older van for what it would cost and then just sell it when you get there.
  • Google for RV rentals. Cruise America is a big one.

Pick up a road atlas and highlight stops and interests of places you want to see enroute to Iowa so you can give us an idea of the route you may be taking. Then perhaps we could recommend places to stay.

However, if you're only taking 4 or 5 days that won't leave time to see anything. Any chance of traveling a longer period of time?

Keep in mind that if you only travel on the interstates you won't be seeing much other than traffic and billboards. :)
