We also carry a full or almost full tank. First off, we like our water and have run across so many places we didn't like the water. Secondly we do stops and use our toilet and sinks and it's nice to have that ability. We don't notice any difference in gas/performance with the tank full on our way there or it almost empty on the way back. As others stated--better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Compromise and put 15-20 gallons in so you are prepared.
X2 on liking our water better. Lots of places have water that is just fine, but when we use water from home, my DW doesn't mind drinking it, but any water sourced from the campground leaves her less confident about drinking. Worth carrying it around.
Also I really don't like taking the time to fill the water tank upon arriving at the campground after all that time on the road, no matter how much time it really is.
