Yes that drain plug is a pain to get to. I finally solved that issue by screwing it back in finger tight. Then put the socket and the socket only on the plug and turn a bit tighter with your fingers. It won't leak and it's easy to remove the next time yo want to drain it.
Make sure to run a hot faucet in the RV until the pressure is released from the tank before you pull the plug.
