Water Damage

HI All... I am new here... MY name is Melissa and I have a coachman travel trailer. I noticed the other day that I have a water spot on my floor right near the door. I looking in the bathroom closet which is right there too and the whole floor looks like there is water damage. I think it might be coming from my hot water tank system because the tank is right in the closet.

Where do I even begin to find the leak. I know I need to find the leak and then I will have to replace the floor too....

Any advice/tips

Thanks
  • We had a similar problem on our 2010 Jayco 5ver. I found the lower water fitting on the hot water heater tank was leaking. It was just a drip about every 30-60 seconds. The pipe fitting was plastic and couldn't be screwed in any further because it was a straight pipe thread fitting. I replaced it with a brass tapered pipe fitting with some pipe dope on it. Cured the problem. Fortunately I caught my leak before any damage was done.

One other issue I have found early on is that not all of the threaded drain fittings were as tight as they should have been and they got even looser over time. I assume from being towed down the road. Once I went to winterize the rig and as I was running the RV anti-freeze into the kitchen sink it was running out of the sink drain onto the floor and out on to the ground through joint between the side wall and floor. Now at least twice a year I check ALL threaded drain fittings to make sure they are tight.
  • Unless the water heater is very old, you likely have a leak at a connection. If just a drip, it can take some work to find it. For some fellow campers with a new rig under warranty, it took three trips to the dealer, first two tries "fixed" problems that weren't there.
  • That is where we had water damage also, hot water heater. Made us sick to think about it when we first discovered the damage. Thought the whole word was falling apart. The leak turned out was nothing more than the hot water pipe connection leaking a few drops every minute but over a long period and never getting dry caused a lot of damage. And just a couple turns of the fitting stopped the leak, right at the pipe threads.
  • Thanks Everyone... I really think its the hot water heater somehow only because of where my hot water heater is and where the water damage in on the floor... its right there.

I have a 2003 coachman Sprit of America
  • I would check all connections to the water heater before removing it. Maybe a good inspection will reveal a leaking connection that just may need tightening.

PS: It is CoachmEn, not CoachmAn. Good luck with your repairs.
  • Before you spend time for a system water leak vs a roof or window leak, I would fill the holding tank and turn on the pump. If its a line leaking you will hear the pump turn on as the pressure drops. If its not a line leak, start at the roof and work your way down.
  • Thanks for responding... How hard is it to replace the water heater? If that is leaking I will have to replace it. Could it be just a hose or something or most likely the water heater?
  • hot water tanks are aprimary place for leakstooccur. Presureize the slystem and use a flashlight to look at the bottom of the tank. You will probable see drips. You can buy just the tank if you are cabable of removing the unit and disassembling it. It is easier to buy a complete unit. Make sure that the new one has the connections that match the one you have.
