So do you leave. The waterheaater on all the time when boondocking or just turn it on before shower?

We strictly boondock. I leave the water heater on all day but usually turn it off at night so it doesn't wake the kids when it fires up (it is located right under their bed). It will keep water piping hot for many hours when left off, usually the water is still hot to the touch first thing in the morning.
