So do you leave. The waterheaater on all the time when boondocking or just turn it on before shower?

All RVs have a switch to turn the water heater on and off.
Not all water heaters include an electric heating element. If yours does there is a separate switch for it.
All water heaters require 12v electric power to run the control board.
