Weigh Stations?

I would assume it's like a rental car. The rental place is making money but not by hauling materials. I guess if you have to, they'll make you go back and weigh.

If you rent it for camping and stuff, then it is personal. If you rent it to do some kind of business like transport band group or something, then it is commercial. It boils down to how you are using it not what is on the side of the camper.

This applies to uhual truck as well. If you rent uhual to move your furniture to a new house, then it is personal. If someone hired you (pay you) to move their furniture and you rented the truck, then it is commercial purpose. You still have to stop by the weight scale if you are using the truck for personal purpose because they have no way of knowing if you are using it for personal or commercial business as you pass the scale.

Actually, they don't until you get pulled over for speeding, get in wreck or something like that. That is when they will start asking questions or look into the camper or whatever. They are not really concern with RV because it does not get very heavy like semis, which can weight up to 80K pounds.

Why would anyone laugh? That was a valid question for someone new to this RV thing. Always better to ask if you have questions.

I agree with "Gene&Ginny". It's a valid question. The road signs usually say all vehicles when referring to trucks and trailers and can be confusing to a newbie. Just remember that in most cases where there is signage about large vehicles, motor homes are exempted.

My personal feeling is that sometime in the future if the States/Government can find a way to charge a fee, they'll start weighing coaches.

Regarding the uhaul, not sure about the US, but up here that's incorrect. I had family that was moving from Ottawa to Moncton, NB, albeit about 15 years ago, and they got stopped along the way in Quebec because they went by a weigh station and they came after them.

Just to clear this up, at least for Illinois. The poster who has the relative working at the scale house in Illinois is correct, private RV's don't have to weigh. It boils down to how they are registered.

Now if you see a big new FW pulling into an Illinois scale house look closely because he will probably have writing on the side of his dually. He will no doubt be "for hire" or in other words a commercial vehicle and delivering a new unit for one of the many factories located in northern Indiana.

I unfortunately have to agree, I think in the future, they will start weighing Non-commercial coaches, probably starting with anything over 40' (just for a starting point), unless they want to just start weighing everything, in which case they will have to build many more scales, & many more temp scales, then each state will have to hire an army of folks to man them, this will then in turn, defeat the purpose of weighing everything to write more overload tickets.

Do you really think your MH, 5er, TT is anywhere near overweight? Seriously? You think you're anywhere near 20,000 lbs on a single axle? Really?

No I don't, but I also don't have a 40' Prevost, I'm not worried about my little class C, but I believe that in the future, that States & the feds, will be looking for more money, & to that end they will be adding restrictions for length in addition to weight & any other way they can think of.
And as far as that weight, 20,000 per axle, what makes you think they can't lower that at any time they choose.
