Some people should have. In 2001 I remember a mortgage broker saying I could afford a mortgage for $XXX,000. I said, "Are you kidding me? No way I'd take on that much debt." Note, I could afford the monthly payment. Way too many people said, "Sign me up" and we went into the mortgage crisis eventually.
Will you get bad advice on a forum? Of course. Your neighbor, mortgage broker, or financial advisor can give you bad advice as well. If you get 20-30 serious replies to your post, you have a balance of opinions that you can weigh.
Then, you make the decision yourself, just with a little more information than before.
