We started out with an older (1985) 26' Class C. BIG mistake. It was old enough to have a carburetor and smog gear and had a Ford 460 engine. It got 6 mpg at sea level, and 4.5 at altitude.
Second rig was a '02 32' Class A. Fairly spacious, relatively easy to drive and very reliable, with the fuel-injected 6.8L Ford V-10. It got a consistent 8 mpg. We looked at the Mercedes based Sprinters, but concluded they were too small for our accompanying two Labradors and us.
We did about 2000 miles a season, so we'd spend $1000 for the season at the gas prices (around $4.00 when we were travelling). It would be just over half that now. Since we gave up the RV life after 4 years, I'm glad we didn't fret too much over the cost of fuel.
