I think it is somewhat dependent on your age and what you still are able and want to do. Having camped/backpacked when we were younger we went went to a hi top van and traveled in that for years. When I retired I thought I wanted to get a Class B, however when you compare the price of a B to a C, the C's and A's for that matter were cheaper. If you throw in the added cost of a diesel like a Sprinter the cost goes up significantly for very little room inside compared to a C or an A. After much research and figuring out how I was going to use the MH and where I wanted to camp I chose the Class A because of the lower life cycle cost and the added space. I tow a car that get 40 mpgs and put as many miles on the car as I do the MH. I usually find a NF,NP,SP or other remote CG and use the tow car to explore the surrounding area to sight see,day hike, fish etc. The MH has averaged 8.7 mpg over 80,000 miles of travel so the combined mpg is about 23 mpg. The A will have bigger FW tanks and a more HD suspension, and higher ground clearance for remote camping plus a lot more interior space. Being "minimalist backpackers" I don't think you want to spend your time camping in a FHU CG or RV resorts. Don't just look at the mpg of the camper consider the big picture and how you will use it.
