Rent first. We did but we didn't do it enough. The price of a rental that you may not like is a lot cheaper than buying something and in the end discovering it's not for you and you take it in the shorts.
Take your time, there's no rush. There will always be another one. Also, buy used but be wise. Spend the money for an independent inspection and a leak test. If they don't agree walk away. If the price is not in your budget, walk away.
Don't be intimidated by what others have. Find what you like, fits your tow vehicle and is within your budget. If you want to go in debt, buy an appreciable asset not a new truck or rv.
