Unfortunately, there won't be a "next time" for us due to a combination of shortage of funds, age and general "creeping" infirmity. We started out with an older ('85) Class C. Ford 460 with a carburator and enough smog gear for a fleet of cabs. Six mpg at sea level and 4 or so at altitude. We have a lot of high-altitude highways around here - our favorite route eastwards went over Washington Pass which is 5200 ft asl.
We got rid pf that piece of junk within the first season. After a hiatus of a couple of years, we found a one-owner 32' Georgetown for sale locally by the owner. That had the Ford V-10 and a 5-speed transmission. We enjoyed it a lot.
Engine noise was only a big issue in the lower gears - in 5th, it was tolerable. The worst noise issue was climbing Washington pass westbound. It's about 10 miles continuous uphill, and the transmission held 3rd gear all the way.
I never bothered to add insulation at the firewall, as our annual mileage was only about 2000.
To gt REALLY quiet, you have to get a DP.
