Effy, if you offer me your handshake it means nothing to you? That's your position? Please be careful in any answer you care to make
LOL, sounds almost like a veiled threat. Why do I need to be careful in my answer to you? Are we in a deal? You going to school me on ethics? You don't even know me.
If I agree to help my neighbor paint his fence and we shake on it, well, that's a little different than a legal deal with strangers over a hundred grand isn't it?
Anyway, I am careful, that's why I don't hang my hat on a handshake when it comes to deals with money and strangers. I am a very ethical person but the guy you are shaking hands with often isn't. Don't mistake my caution for being unethical. But if you think that a handshake in this day and age offers the same protection as legal documents then good luck to you. Personally I do not go to an RV dealership to make friends and offer high pants, fast talking gentlemen's agreements liken to circa 1922. I am there to make a legal deal with an exchange of money - a lot of money, more of which the dealer will try and gouge from me as much as he can. So no, I refuse to play the naïve game that his handshake is as good as mine. Because odds are, it isn't so it's value against legal documents is worthless. I've tried that when I was younger and naïve and learned some very hard lessons. I do what I say I am going to do. I expect him to do what the legal documents say he's supposed to do. That's how I make a deal. You want to hang your deal on a handshake, knock yourself out and good luck. But don't judge me for being cautious and leveraging the law to protect me and my money.
All that said, I think the OP changing his mind simply because he shopped around after the deal and found it cheaper isn't really right - legal maybe but not "right". He should have done his shopping prior and as long as the dealer honors the deal they made, he should stick to it and shame on him for not doing better homework prior to the deal. I wasn't suggesting what he is doing is right. I was answering his question about legality. Then you come along and question my ethical character. Don't judge me unless you are in a position to do so.
