Totally get the fact that the only legally binding contract is the one in writing, signed by both parties. I don't think anyone is really arguing that.
But, there is also personal integrity involved as well. If you, and the other party, negotiate in good faith, and both parties end the day with an agreement (which these two obviously have), pending successful passing of the walk through, etc.. then I still believe in the commitment made by both parties. Just because I found the same thing cheaper after the fact doesn't change that in my opinion. Use it to negotiate something added in return... fine. Again, how would OP (or any of us) feel if dealer got a better offer and cancelled his end of the sale? Would we be pissed? I know I would be.. I'd be mad because we had an 'agreement', albeit not enforceable by law.
How many of us have bought a vehicle and then found a similar/same one on sale cheaper? It happens... so be it. I get that legally you can walk away, but is it worth it? Are you going to have to deal with that dealer in the future for warranty or service work? How will he treat you when you come in after the fact? Are you REALLY saving 3 grand as you say? Or is it less by the time you factor cost to go pick it up and return, and what about the other 'hidden' costs from this new dealer that has it cheaper? My bet, OP goes to this new dealer and finds out that there's doc fees etc and costs to travel to pick it up, that the net savings is a grand or so... worth it? Not in my book.
