Who do you use for Insurance?

I just sold my Coleman, and had Gieco on it. I have a new 5th wheel that I will be purchasing in about 2 weeks, and am looking for alternative insurance companies. Since it is financed, it is mandatory. Gieco is OK, but it's year round, so when stored I still pay full rate.

  • We have Progressive now and we've had National General in the past. I check every year for the best rate with comparable coverage. These past two years it just so happens that Progressive was the cheapest. Fortunately, we haven't had to file a claim in the 6 years we've been RVing.
  • Safeco. All our other policies (3 vehicles, house, RZR) are with Allstate but Safeco was still cheaper for the same coverage, even once a multi-policy discount was factored in with Allstate.
  • State Farm - 30+ years for everything.

Regarding insurance year 'round, motorcycles and RV's are like that just about all the major carriers. If a tree falls on your RV in winter...insurance won't pay. Water damage during storage? Won't pay. We had water damage on a TT back in 2003/4 winter. Insurance wrote check for $3,500 after RV dealer said how much to fix. Would not have paid without insurance.

The motorhome is the first RV we've financed in 20+ years of RVing. Still, I keep my insurance on stuff, stored or not.

If you had a motorcycle in your garage over winter, and no insurance because not using it, and garage burned....well, it would only pay for contents up to a certain amount (tools, motorcycle, stuff, etc. all combined). Best keep it year 'round.
  • Yes, it is a requirement to have it insured before it even is hooked to the truck. So much to do, so little time. :)
  • Kind of depends on where you're located. Had Progressive on my prior FW while living in California but switched to Texas Farm Bureau when we moved to Texas. I've read that there are some who disable their insurance while in storage but I don't know what companies allow that. Being financed, I would think the bank would want it insured 100% of the time just in case it gets broken into or something worse.

    Good luck in your search.
  • We have a Class C and have National General Ins. Haven't had to use them. On our 5th wheel we had Foremost Ins-never used them either
  • State Farm, the same people that insure everything else I have.
