Winterizing water tank.

I store my pop-up in my attached garage but at times it can get below freezing. It has a 10 gallon water tank with a pump. For some reason the drain valve on the tank does not drain the water, havent been able to figure out why yet. Is just running the pump until it can't pump any water good enough or do I somehow need to get all the water out? Would running a hose down the fill spout and syphoning water out work? Anything else I need to consider on the camper?

Thanks!

  • Is it possibles you have to pull out instead of turning the valve? On mine the low point drains look like they need to be turned, but they just spin freely when turned. After a few minutes I figured out I had to pull out on the valve and then it started draining.

Yes, you can run the pump until no more water comes out. What water is left in the tank shouldn't hurt anything - you can put some RV antifreeze in there if you aren't sure.

Make sure the water pump is empty when you are done! or... also run RV antifreeze through it.

Meanwhile, figure out what is wrong with your tank drain valve. My freshwater tank drain valve actually needs to turn 180 degrees to open, not just 90 degrees, so make sure you are turning it as far as needed. It may not drain fast, so give it a chance to see if it is draining when you turn it.

Otherwise you may have to replace it. Not that big a job - assuming you can get to it!
  • Keep in mind that we don't know what kind of valve you have. Can you open the valve and poke a pencil up into the opening? It could have some debris blocking the drain.
  • Have you tried opening a faucet with the drain valve open to see if it comes out?

If I open the drain valve, even if the tank is full no water at all comes out.

See if the handle broke off of the gate that slides back and forth.
  • how is that work, look up in there to see if the valve is opening or the handle is just moving and has broke of the gate part

  • Wouldn't you want to drain the pump and lines also? A little water in the tank is not the end of the world, you should empty it but at least some water in the tank has room to expand.
