work and camping..

Do any of you camp while working? The reason I ask is this... I might be getting a job that is 3 hours from our home. with 12 hour shifts, I would get roughly 5-6 hours at home (basically sleeping) between shifts. Wife and I were thinking maybe we need to get a camper that I can live in while out at work and then head home when I have more than a day off. Anyone do that?

on another note... I figure I would need a 4 season camper to handle the Wyoming winters. From what all the salespeople are saying, there are no 4 season TTs unless you buy a winter-ize kit. I'd rather not do that. So is a 5th wheel my only option? Please enlighten me.

My truck will have no problem pulling anything except maybe the BIGGEST campers. No need for em either, since all I need is a place to live for 4-7 days at a crack. nothing special. My wife thinks we should get a Montana High Country so it'll take care of my living needs and the optional family camping that comes up. I'll get a 7 day vacation every month. wooot!

what say ya all EOEs???

thanks!

  • well, not worried about the adventure part. just trying to save commute time (and diesel), and safety of so much travel. any other ideas?

Cold don't bother me much. I've spent 40 years in the north. Love the snow. Can not stand the south. I overheat way to easily.
  • Camping in the dead of winter (below 0 degrees extended time) sounds like an adventure but it's not. I did it for three winters in a TT that has the "Extreme Package". If you do, get the best thermal coveralls and electric socks you can afford. Be prepared for frozen holding tanks and elbows, water backed up in the shower, iced windows on the inside, etc. I'm sure you get the picture. Four season TT is marketing hipe and only good to about 20 degrees. I never owned a fiver but it would probably do better.
  • so you're saying that I should only go with a 4 season RV..... just getting it clear in my head...
  • There is no such thing as a winterize kit that will convert a RV for use in extreme climates. Can you live in a RV in a harsh winter climate? YES! Is it easy to do? NO? Can someone who has never owned a RV be successful with harsh winter camping? NOT LIKELY!
