People buy them. Manufacturers design the interiors, then figure out where to put the furnace and water heater afterwards - and sometimes the logical place ends up being on the awning side.
This is something that matters to me though. I'd be okay with the furnace but really didn't want the water heater under the awning. (Both are on the driver's side on my trailer.)
