$10,000 surety bond?

I recently inquired about C.O.E. entrance gate position and was told all people have to purchase a $10,000 insurance bond. I have never heard of this before. Have any of you ever had to do this?

  • I figured that is what the background investigation is for. We have worked at numerous city, county, and state parks dealing with large sums of money and none of them required a bond. We workamp for enjoyment, so we'll just pass on the C.O.E. parks.

The COE will require a Bond from anyone that collects any type of fees. Even volunteers are required to have a Bond if they collect fees.

The COE reimburses the cost of the Bond for most volunteer positions but not for paid contractor positions.

It's been my experience that the Bond will cost about $100.00.
  • Be sure to read the complete terms & scope in their bid package documents. The bond is just one of many such requirements you must comply with, when working for the Gov as a contractor.
Don't assume that anything in there is optional or doesn't apply to this position. they mean what they say and you're in breach of contract if you don't comply.
Working as a contractor is quite different than as an employee.
Just to get on the bidder list you will need a D&B (Dunn&Bradstreet) business number and register online as a government contractor.

  • There was a discussion about this on another forum. It is a common requirement because you will be handling cash funds. See your insurance agent. They are relatively inexpensive. In MI, you could get a bond for $50 per year.
  • I've never done COE before but from what I've read here, aren't those independent contractor positions where you bid for the job? If that's the case, just make sure you factor in all your expenses (including the surety bond) when you bid.
