We love state parks. Research what state parks have to offer on a meandering trip across the country. Some examples.
Buckskin State Park Arizona
Rifle Falls State Park Colorado
Black Mesa State Park Oklahoma
Palo Duro Canyon State Park Texas
Petit Jean State Park Arkansas

My wife wants to visit an old high school girlfriend in Similar Valley .....we are leaving Bedford , Virginia around mid June......we have a class a gasser and towing.......once we get to I-40 that will be our main route .....in '06 we did a west trip to Rushmore....Jackson Hole...Wall Drug......GC.....Las Vegas......80 out and 40 back......didn't make it past rockies....didn't stop much on 40 on return trip ....looking for anything where it would be worth staying a couple days at a time in fairly decent cg.

I am leaving Va to Simi Valley via I-40......can YOU recommend things to do and see along I-40........we want to especially stop in Sadona

We have no exact route except
I fly to California on May 21 and get the truck woke up and the trailer ready to travel
I will leave Santa Cruz California on June 2 with the truck and 5th wheel and pick up Eve in Las Vegas on June 4th.
from there it is open which route we take, On the East Coast we will hit the Smithsonian the 10th time, Philadelphia to visit Eves 106 year old Aunt, then to visit Eve's mother in Middletown NY, on to Nova Scotia for lobster season,
then back to California by August 27th

If you are baseball fans, a tour of minor league ball parks should take you to some very interesting small cities and towns you might never otherwise visit.

Pennsylvania has a lot of nice state parks and state historical sites not to mention the National historic sites too.The Drake Well Mueseum in Titusville is the site of the first oil well in the country.Lot's to see and learn there.The Pennsylvania train museum in Straussberg is great as is the Military Museum in Boalsburg.While there you may want to tour Penns' Cave.The tour is by boat since the whole cave is filled with water.As for the national sites We have the Allegheny Portage Railroad,The Johnstown Dam Flood Museums,Hopewell Furnace,Valley Forge and the Liberty Bell.Ricketts Gelnn State Park has a 2 miles trail where u can view 13 different waterfalls of varying heights up to 90 feet.They also have a campground and lake.Promised land state park is the only Pa state park campground with full hookups and brand new bath houses.We have Lake Erie,the Allengheny National Forest,Gettysburg and a whole lot more.

Quite frankly, the most fun and learning experiences will be found in the smaller towns and less advertised commercial attractions. We always enjoy visiting the local museums, visiting with the local folks, and visiting the local Elks lodge if one is located close by.

Order some local newspapers from the smaller towns you visit and investigate some of their community functions. I still subscribe to the local newspaper of my small hometown and we really enjoy taking in some of the community functions we are able to visit for a few day.

How does one become an Elk, Dick? I understand the Elks Clubs have free RV hook ups for members across the country. Id there an online directory of the Elks Clubs with hook ups?

Almost any small town newspaper is free online. As well, any small town library is a font of local information. Easy peasy to find these local librarys - just ask anyone!

Have you been to Kartchner Caverns in Benson AZ, or the Cochise Stronghold? Kartchner is one of the few living caves in the US but you want to get there before July. They close half of the cave due to it's being a nesting cave for bats. Cochise Stronghold is a small mountain range that caused the US Cavalry a lot of pain during the Apache Wars. Lots of hiking, 15-20 miles of AZ dusty roads to get there and dry camping only. If you decide to visit do not take your RV to the Stronghold. I'm going to assume that you've been to Moab UT and the surrounding state and national parks. If not that would be worth a 4 week stay. Have you done the Cabot trail on Cape Breton Island? We did that one on a motorcycle. Prince Edward Island is a joy if you haven't been there. You can drive over now, we had to take the ferry over. Have you done CA Rt 1 south the Big Sur, Hearst Castle Morrow Bay? What about Rt 1 North thru the redwoods and coastal Oregon and on into Portland the Seattle. Then take 90 (you didn't mention 90) east thru Spokane, and eventually Rapid City SD. You could spend a few weeks in the Black Hills and surrounding sreas. From there head to the Great Lakes and take some of the routes already suggested. There's always Duluth MN and points north (way north) Vince Shute Bear Sanctuary

Have a great time this year. We're heading to Alaska and most points in between plus the Arctic Circle this year.

My husband and I mNy years ago took two weeks touring the real south, sleeping in Antebellum bed and breakfasts, visiting Vicksburg and other civil war sites. Doing a thesis if you will, on the civil war and touring and sleeping in some of these old pre-civil war mansions can be romantic and quite interesting, not to mention downright moving...
