This is a little off the beaten path but why not check out the Montana Dinosaur Trail. Come into Montana in the southeast corner on state 212 then north at Alzada on 323 to Ekalaka, the museum there is really awesome for such a small community, they will have the info for the rest of the dinosaur trail. You can boondock north of Ekalaka at Medicine Rocks State park. Hiking and rock climbing there. All 2 lane roads but not too bad.
