From the posted article (at least it wasn't USA Today)

"The winner of the June 5 Republican primary will be elected to the job because there are no other candidates."

So, if the actual residents don't care enough about who gets elected, what is problem? Those 162 mythical South Dakotans had no effect on the outcome of this election.
