2013 or 2014 Jeep Towing

Anyone towing, or just driving, a GC with the hemi engine? How is the engine working for you? What kind of mileage?

I am considering a purchase so am curious about the vehicle

Not sure, but from my experience and after towing a jeep liberty for 100K plus miles and looking at a GC to replace it I had several salesmen tell me you can tow any 4X4 jeep. Not so. I even had one salesman tell me that I could tow any vehicle on the lot, just put it in neutral. I told him he was too ignorant about cars for me to waste my time talking to. A friend bought a vehicle to tow because he had seen others tow the same model vehicle. Found two days after purchase his could not be towed. "Some can and some cannot". One never knows

Best thing to do is read the owners manual and check the procedure. Look under "recreational towing or towing behind a motorhome". That is what I did, and yes there is one 4x4 transmission that cannot be towed.

Why do you think I bought it?

We have a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with the Hemi. We really like it and It was the only 4-down towable suv that could tow our boat @ 7200lbs. Gas mileage is about what you would expect for that engine but I really do not like the 6-speed transmission. The gear ratios are very uneven and you almost have to shift it manually to make it smooth. I have a 2014 with the 8-speed on order, the new transmission is considerably smoother.

Just got back from the dealership and we should be able to pick ours up this weekend. They had to get it from another dealer. We had driven the V6 but they couldn't find one in the color we wanted so had to get one with the hemi to get the color. That thing runs like a scalded cat.

Hopefully it will be a good replacement for our '00 GC, which we are going to keep, that has 162,000 showing and over 100,000 towing.

  • We own a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with a Hemi. Great vehicle. We have towed it all over the country without any issues. I can hardly tell it's back there until I check the rear view camera. It's very easy to hook-up for towing once you read and follow the directions in the owner's manual.

When not towing we get around 15mpg around town and 20-21 mpg on the highway running at 65-70 mph. DW loves it as do I, it's her car when we are at home.
