2014 ram 1500 air suspension

Hey all. I just bought a new ram 1500 4x4 with the air suspension to pull my 26ft 6000lb travel trailer. My question is do I set up my wd hitch the same as a non air suspension truck? My truck is self leveling that's why I ask. Thanks.
  • That is a great question. In my opinion, the only was is to use CAT scales. I am interested in learning from you. I am in the market for a 1500 with the VM diesel. I like the air suspension, but am afraid what will happen if you are over GVW on the truck.

If you are not sure how to use the CAT scales, just ask. If you find a better way, let us know. I will be subscribing to this thread.
  • You set it up to the current ride height. The beauty of the air ride suspension, it will self level and return to the proper height. Set it up without calculating for load squat.
  • Make sure you park it where it is dead level when you do your measuring.
  • Hey thanks, I also read that you have to disable the suspension. You can do this by going to jack mode in the settings. That will keep the suspension from doing any adjusting. Set the wd hitch up and enable suspension and go.
  • You will need to visit the scales. The problem with the auto self level is that you cannot visibly see the weight coming off the front axle, therefore you will only get correctly set up with the aid of the scale. Hanging 6-7-800+ lb 4' from the rear axle will definitely unload the front axle. The laws of physics say so.
  • Yeah, but if I disable the air suspension for the set up process I shouldn't need a scale. I could set it up normally.

There you have the advantage of having the owner's manual to read and appear to have answered your own query.
    All the best.
  • Well the manual doesn't say anything about setting up to pull a trailer only disabling the suspension to change a tire.
  • I think you will get fairly close with the air suspension turned off, but when it brings it back up to level once you turn it back on, it will change things. It will level the truck and partially unload your w/d bars. If the front is self leveling, which I think it might be on your truck, I think final verification at a scale will be required. If the front is not self leveling, then you can let it re-level the rear and then check to see if the front end still has enough load on it by checking height. Does your manual say anything about how much weight you want on the front end? Should you put back 50%, 75%, or 100% of what was removed? You need to know that as well.
