25 years ago at CW

After reading about David Garvin’s tragic death, I was recollecting about our first time in a Camping World. It was 1989 and we were heading toward L.A. and home, when we stopped at a CW in Oregon. We remember it being in the Wilsonville area. My first impression was, WOW, these folks are really nice and most of the employee’s appeared to be older than the DW or I. Talked to a few of the employees and they were almost all retirees and most were camping nearby. Spending the summer up north and having fun. We were obviously newbies and we were asking a lot of questions from these old timers. There was a wealth of information working there and they all seemed to be having fun.

It’s not like that now and there must be a problem or Marcus wouldn’t have started his “Ask Marcus” campaign. Maybe the stores were running under a different purpose statement then or maybe things have really changed and professional, high pressure and indifferent sales clerks who are not RVers are selling more that the jolly old folks who really knew RV’s inside and out and weren’t trying to BS you from the time you walked in the door.

Just a random thought or two.

  • the CW in my area are fantastic people. they help ya. simple as that. and they go beyond to get your problems figured out. I love our CW! a few employees I know camped. they were experienced and we traded funny stories about camping while chatting with them. it is an enjoyable store to frequent.

My experience has been the same as the OP's not only at CW but with any RV salesmen. Having said that I stopped at a bike store yesterday and talked to a young man that told me more about bikes than I ever new without trying to sell me what they had in stock. I would love to find an RV place or salesmen like that. He owns 6 bikes of all kinds and has been all over the world Mtn Biking for 20 years.
  • The camping world in Seffner used to use full time rvers but after they moved to Dover I do not know if they still do or not.....
  • I have noticed that the CW store that we frequent (Knoxville, tn) has some new employees that are campers. This store seems to be looking at employees that do camp. Hope this is a ongoing Trent.
  • Same with the Belleville, MI store. They are great group of people working there all ages and if they can't answer a question they know who to ask who can. They are in the process of putting new tires and shocks on my Motor Home this coming week.
The biggest think I've seen in the store are customers have become rude and thing that RVs are just like cars and easy to fix which is far from the truth. The other thing is they have many general RV items in stock and not ever part. For a store to have that they would have to build a building acres in size.
  • The people in my store are fantastic. Yes, there are young people in there who may not have camped yet but they are still helpful. The older ones will always share their experiences and are very helpful.

You cant become the Home Depot of rv supplies and be like the first small stores were. I haven't rv'd as long as many in here but I can remember back before CW bought out our local store. They had nothing compared to the selection we have now. If I dont want to go to the CW store I order online with reasonable and quick shipping.
